Chatting to Johann Vorster who races in the Pinto class, it’s clear to see how dedicated and passionate the racing drivers are in the oval category. Since a youngster Johann was inspired by his now fellow racing competitors Koos & Gerhard Koekemoer, something I can relate to when I got involved with motorsport at a very young age.
Listening to Johann as he did the interview with me, one got the feeling that there is more behind the person under the racing helmet, something the crowds rarely get to see. It’s time to change all that and I want to bring to you the inside stories of racing drivers like Johann.
Johann started out with trepidation as camera shy first took hold, but once the interview got under way Johann was eager to tell us how he started his racing career and how others around him inspired him and helped him on his way. Johann has a business in Heidelburg , and spends as much time as he can to improve his race car and get it competitive.
As the interview went on Johann then told us about his loss, his little boy who frequented the Rock Raceway with him had sadly passed away a four months earlier,Johann’s son was about to turn two years old.
Our hearts go out to Johann and his family during this difficult time.
After this interview I stepped back to take a moment and think about how oval racing had grown here in South Africa over the years
I also came to the conclusion that contrary to the rumors that the oval fraternity is tight fisted with information and what they view as a one sided affair, perhaps it’s because nobody has taken the opportunity to open up to these drivers and actually find out what makes them tick.
I’ll keep you posted as we go trackside and chat to more Oval drivers.
