Johann Voster
Johann Voster - Pinto Class Car No 37
Chatting to Johann Vorster who races in the Pinto class, it’s clear to see how dedicated and passionate the racing drivers are in the oval category. Since a youngster Johann was inspired by his now fellow racing competitors Koos & Gerhard Koekemoer, something I can relate to when I got involved with motorsport at a very young age.
Listening to Johann as he did the interview with me, one got the feeling that there is more behind the person under the racing helmet, something the crowds rarely get to see. It’s time to change all that and I want to bring to you the inside stories of racing drivers like Johann.
Johann started out with trepidation as camera shy first took hold, but once the interview got under way Johann was eager to tell us how he started his racing career and how others around him inspired him and helped him on his way. Johann has a business in Heidelburg , and spends as much time as he can to improve his race car and get it competitive.
As the interview went on Johann then told us about his loss, his little boy who frequented the Rock Raceway with him had sadly passed away a four months earlier,Johann’s son was about to turn two years old.
Our hearts go out to Johann and his family during this difficult time.
After this interview I stepped back to take a moment and think about how oval racing had grown here in South Africa over the years
I also came to the conclusion that contrary to the rumors that the oval fraternity is tight fisted with information and what they view as a one sided affair, perhaps it’s because nobody has taken the opportunity to open up to these drivers and actually find out what makes them tick.
I’ll keep you posted as we go trackside and chat to more Oval drivers.
Henry Pike
Henry Pike - Mini Stox Car No 22
Oval racing has come a long way since the early 60’s when there was a hand full of classes for the petrol heads who loved the roar of engines. As a youngster one always would dream of getting behind the wheel of an oval car and too many a driver that only came true in their late twenties only.
Since then the face of oval has changes as the classes have grown. Now a youngster from the tender age of 8 years old can get him or herself behind the wheel of a race car and go racing, it’s all about the development of motorsport at grass roots level, making racing as affordable as possible for folks to get their youngsters into while they themselves can enjoy the sport as a family.
So let’s take a ride with one of Rock Raceway’s up and coming racing drivers, Henry Pike in his No 22 G&E Panelbeaters Mini. Folks hold onto your seats, because we will actually experience what it’s like for young Henry behind the wheel, as he pushes the boundaries of his Mini around the oval.
Young Henry has racked up a good few victories and is well situated in the points for the end year championships.
Are you guys ready, buckle up here we go…
Niclas Schwartz
Niclas Schwartz - Ninja Midgets Car No 51
The July event was a daunting event for young Niclas Schwartz as his fellow competitors where missing in action due to various other commitments leaving Niclas and young Dylan Daly to make a brave decision shortly before the start of the event. Not content to sit on the stands and be a spectator, young Niclas and Dylan entered their 60cc Ninja Midget Karts into the 100cc bigger brother class the Micro Midgets. With trepidation we all held our breath as the start flag dropped and a flying start to the event commenced.
To everybody’s surprise Niclas white knuckled the control device and drove a stunning event winning all three heats in the Ninja & Micro Midget event combined. A few heart stopping moments in a few the laps as the faster Micro Midgets darted around Niclas. There was a Micro Midget who lost traction in front of the young Ninja driver but like a pro in action Niclas quick reaction held his race line and avoided any contact.
Keeping to reasonable pace to the Micro Midget class Niclas kept a level head and drove the No 51 Liebherr / Archer Equipment & B&N Field Services Ninja Midget to victory lane, making all his sponsors proud to have their name displayed on the loyal racing driver’s car.
The Rock Raceway Management team took stock of all the competitors for the day as this was to be the first Driver Of The Day Award to be handed out to a competitor who stood out above the rest.
It was no surprise that young Niclas would get the award, as the crowds cheered him on round for round.
Niclas has accumulated various awards during his short racing career.
The Rock Raceway Team and his fellow competitors, sponsors and fans wish him good luck for his next event and are all looking forward to seeing him on the track.
Mc Lensley
MC Lensley - 1600 Stockrod Car No 8
With no less than 17 entries on the start line the 1600 tin top class was deemed to be doomed as the tension grew short before the green flag fell.
I am sure a few racing drivers grew a pair a seriously large goons when they arrived at the start line seing such a large field of race cars to contend with.
Patron’s eyes grew wider and wider as the first corner was entered four wide, as these rookie drivers threaded the needle as they jostled positions for top rankings. With the first few laps into the race some chariots suffered handling difficulties as tyres heated up and major over steer caused a few to run wider than they expected.
With a few bumps and jumps some pulled off to the infield half way through the event. 12 of the 17 finished the first heat.
In the second and final heats to follow they almost all returned again for more high speed battles, some managed to curb the ill handling behavior of their race cars, and others found themselves scavenging parts off fellow race competitors cars who suffered lethal fate from the engine reaper.
It was a hard and fast battle round for round, and for one particular racing driver, patience paid off as he slowly but surely crept to the front line. Keeping his nose clean and dodging a few a stray race cars out of line it was MC Lensley who stole the show at the end of the night.
Not only did this teenager win the event but he isn’t even old enough to drive legally on public roads.
Not surprisingly he walked off with the Drivers Award Of The Night, and well received and cheered on by his fellow competitors at prize giving.
It was great to see the turnout at prize giving and see how the guys and girls enjoyed the racing event.
