Steve Nigrini
Steve Nigrini - Opel - Formula N
Steve Nigrini alias “Toppie” is the founder of the Formula N category.
Inspired by his racing career when he started off in 1968, Steve was well known in the Western Cape area when he became W.P Champion and finished 5th in the 3 hour endurance race at the Killarney Race circuit in the Cape. Steve then became the demolition derby champion in the Boland. Steve then took a break from racing in 1993 when Giniel De Villiers took over the reins from Steve and drove from him.
With his two sons at his side Steve, and the love for Motorsport decided to tackle the bull by the horns and develop the Formula N class. Steve purchased a few cars that went into retirement from the old Group N category, and decided to introduce this dynamic new class called Formula N.
The Formula N class is designed for aspiring petrol heads who would love to race their own chariots and keeping racing as affordable as possible. This category of circuit racing allows guys to use their street cars with a few basic safety features and mods needed to get them into racing, petrol heads can look forward to some high speed action and fun in a controlled enviroment.Steve has given many youngsters opportunities by allowing them to race some of his cars in this dynamic category. Both his sons Jaco & Mauritz are now seasoned competitors in the Formula N class.
Getting back behind the wheel of Steve’s new chariot, Steve will be racing the 1993 Opel powered by an 8 valve 1800cc engine. With all the interior removed and extra weight removed, the race car is set for action with a few optional extras, fitted with racing suspension and T&T exhaust branches, slick tyres and an engine that puts out 91 Kw on the dyno, the chariot is set for serious action for 2012.
When we asked Steve what his likes and dislikes are, we received a smile as he answered “ I like racing, cars, speed and oh yes a braai.” With tongue in cheek he also added that “well... I don’t like my ex wives and I hate taxi drivers.” followed by a chuckle.
